Ko wai au · About me

Kia ora, I'm Kayla.

I'm a young, fluent speaker of te reo Māori, born and raised here in Aotearoa. Te reo isn't just a subject to me — it's the language of my tūpuna, my whānau, and the way I see the world.

I teach using a communicative method: from your very first lesson we're speaking, listening, and using real kupu in context. No dry grammar drills, no memorising lists. Everything is rooted in tikanga, so you learn the reo and the values that carry it.

Whether you're reconnecting with your whakapapa or starting from scratch, lessons are warm, patient, and built entirely around you. No platform middlemen — just you and me, kanohi ki te kanohi.

Te ako · What you'll learn

A reo that lives in your everyday

Every lesson is shaped around your goals. Most learners weave together a little of each of these.

Conversational te reo

Speak from day one. We build real, everyday kōrero so you can hold a conversation with confidence.

Pronunciation & waiata

Get the sounds right — vowels, the rolled r, the wh. We use waiata to make pronunciation natural and joyful.

Tikanga & context

Language and culture are woven together. Learn the values, customs and meaning behind the kupu you use.

Reading & writing

Strengthen your written reo — from pepeha and emails to reading pakiwaitara and waiata lyrics.

Words from the whānau

I've wanted to become a competent Māori language speaker for many years, trying both self-study and structured study, but both efforts failed as soon as life became busy again. Working one-on-one with Kayla twice a week allows me to learn and converse in Māori on topics I'm most interested in. This keeps me highly engaged and increases the likelihood of me using the language outside of the sessions. I've found a new love for te reo Māori and I'm impressed with how much vocabulary I've built together with confidence.
